Dear Family & Friends
I've never seen slugs this BIG in our garden...in fact I thought we don't have naked snails = slugs...yes we do have snails but slugs are SHOCKING new find this year!
Our chickens love snails...it's fun watching them when we occasionally throw a snail into their pen...they chase each other for it, just like basketball game! But, when we threw these slugs in....they were very skeptical and scared...till eventually one brave hen showed them that it was posh food - escargot!!
These are gross-looking slugs in a dirty bowl. |
I let marigolds grow in many parts of the garden....but decided that they are growing far too big that I pulled some out that were growing amongst my courgette. Then....I saw and found this SHOCKINGLY BIG courgette... I literally couldn't lift it up....I know....feeble me that is! So, I had to call my husband to come and give me a hand!
See how big it grew unnoticed amongst the vegetation?? It's over two feet long...the biggest one so far we had in the garden!! Definitely not for stuffed courgette meal (that will be a big punishment;P)....I think I will have to give this one to our greedy chickens instead :)
I don't know what more shocking things there are in the garden....but for this week...these are just the two cases that have kept us amused:)
Hope you have lovely surprises where you are too:)...nice surprises would be better:)
Yours
what a ginormous krastavitsa you have there! so how are you chickens? i bet they must be uber happy that you feed them with escargot ;)
ReplyDeleteKrastavitsa is cucumber...this is tikvich = zuchinni/courgette (when still small and cute)...but as it is now this enormous...we would start calling it TIKVATA!:)) Have a good day!
DeleteHi Annie, very adventurous treasure hunt! First time I see a huge fat slugs, no wander your chickens step back to think twice to swallow or not. LOL But when they realize it's escargot...they sure enjoy the scrumptious meal.
ReplyDeleteThat a huge courgette.... good harvest. Let's see what you have in store in your next posting. :))
Have a nice day.
Amelia, with this huge fat slugs... I think there's no need to spread butter on the escargot... we all had to stay away from the chickens while they're eating their gourmet food...otherwise...we get the flick and splatters...they're gross!!
DeleteHi Annie! For someone from a city state, I really envy you for having such a big garden with fresh produces and lovely surprises like this!
ReplyDeleteAlvin...both give different lifestyle... I think city state living is easier and convinient:)
DeleteThat's so great that your chickens will eat those monster slugs AND squash!! Sometimes those squash can really get away from you and grow like crazy...hope those are the only monsters you find!
ReplyDeleteNancy, sometimes it is embarassing to admit that due to neglect..these things can happen...but as you know, we just have to do what we could in a day's work:)
DeleteEvery time I read your garden story, I was amazed! You really have prolific garden and doing fantastic job! That courgette is gigantic! Who is lifting the squash?
ReplyDeleteAmeki, After toiling in the garden along with intense heat from the sun, I could barely lift the camera to take a photo of this for recording history...so, yes, my husband had to do the lifting...he's the strong man:)
